Monthly Snapshot
Local unemployment rates remain high but continue to outperform unemployment measures at the state and national levels. Unemployment rates (not adjusted for seasonal differences) are reported each month by the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development. January 2010 unemployment rates for Dane County and the city of Madison were 6.3% and 5.9% respectively, compared to the respective rates of 9.6% and 10.6% for the state of Wisconsin and the US. Dane County's unemployment rate was the lowest out of 72 Wisconsin counties, while Madison's unemployment rate was the second lowest out of 31 surveyed Wisconsin cities.

The graph below shows monthly unemployment rates dating back to January, 2005. Unemployment rates for Dane County and the city of Madison have consistently outperformed the state and national averages over time.
